McAndrews, Mary
My great grandmother lived long enough for my grandmother to know her and like her. Mary Elizabeth died a little more than a year after my grandfather Michael Joseph married my grandmother Margaret Mary Atckison, and only three months after the birth of what would be her only grandson (my father).
Mary Elizabeth was born as the first child of Martin McAndrews and Margaret McLoughlin. She was born 16 Jun 1866 in Lost Creek, Pennsylvania. Lost Creek was a mining settlement that no longer exists as town. It was near Shenandoah, Pennsylvania. Her mother was a cousin her future husband, and both parents came from Belmullet, Kilcommon, County Mayo, Ireland.
Sometime between the 1880 Federal Census and her marriage to Anthony John McLaughlin in 1881, her father and two brothers were killed in a mine subsidence accident. This led to the relocation of the family from Lost Creek, Pennsylvania to Galion, Ohio.
Mary Elizabeth had twelve children. She lost her daughter Bridget the day of her birth on 16 Oct 1888. She lost Margaret, Anthony, and Laura Irene within 9 months of their respective births. Eight of her children grew to adulthood but she only lived to see her eldest daughter Mary and her son Michael Joseph marry before her death.
