Carlsson, Elsa Florence
Elsa Florence Carlson (note the single s used in the United States) was born on 4 Jan 1917 in Boston, Massachusetts. Her parents were Olaf Fritjof Carlsson and Esther Mattisson.
The 1920 US Census shows Florence E Carlson, age 3, lived with her parents Fritz and Ester Carlson in Precinct 3-4, Part 8, Boston City 21, Suffolk, Massachusetts. The inversion of Florence and Elsa leads me to wonder if her birth certificate is listed under Florence Carlson rather than Elsa (or Elsie). The 1930 US Census shows that Elsie and, her sister, Evelyn Carlson lived in Dedham, Norfolk, Massachusetts with their parents Fritz and Ester Carlson.
The 1940 US Census provides information she never surrendered during life. She’s actually captured twice in the 1940 US Census. She’s listed in her native Falmouth Town, Barnstable, Massachusetts; and West Palm Beach, Election Precinct 8, Palm Beach, Florida (in both cases she lists Brockton, Massachusetts as her home in 1935.
Somehow not a single photograph of her as a little girl managed to survive. Her high school graduation photograph scans with dramatic grain (a repaired image will be posted when available). The next photograph was taken in 1942.
The first photo that scans well was taken on April 1945 in Tampa Florida. My mother was working at a secretary for U.S. Navy base.
