Carlsson, Fritz
Fritz Carlsson was born as Olaf Fritjof Carlsson on 10 Mar 1886 in Tutaryd, Kronoberg, Sweden. He came to the United States after his brothers Carl Johan and Anders.
Fritz was a very talented violinist. He didn’t find a place in Sweden and his parents encouraged him to leave for Sweden where his older brothers could help him.
Olaf Fritjof is first found living as a lodger in the 12th Ward of Boston, Massachusetts in the 1910 Federal Census. We also have this picture postcard. It was taken when he was 25. It appears to be a seasonal card for the 1911 new year. He’s the one on the right in the photograph.
He marries Esther Mattisson in 1916, as shown in the preceding photograph. Fritz and Esther have my mother the following year and her sister Evelyn in 1920.
Fritz eventually adopts work as a gardener and they move to Cape Code. He works as chief gardener on one of the Woods Hole estates. They live in Falmouth, where my Mother and her sister graduate from High School. Fritz dies in 1935 before my mother finishes high school from Tuberculosis.
